Based in an idyllic rural setting in North Richmond, NSW, San Miguel is a child-centred family residential service providing intensive, individualised support to vulnerable young parents and their children. San Miguel aims to transform the lives of young parents and their children by improving their safety, wellbeing and life prospects.
San Miguel is a unique service that plays a critical role in keeping children safe and well and keeping young families together. Parents and children receive support from a multi-disciplinary team through a combination of on-site and community-based interventions that ensure children are engaged in safe, developmentally appropriate activities and their parents are supported to set and pursue family and personal goals.
The Child and Family Counsellor works with young parents around their experience of trauma and their upbringing with the aim of improving parenting and improving child and family safety. You will support young parents to understand how the way they were parented and what they have experienced impacts the way they parent and will support their understanding of safety for themselves and their children.
Your role will include:
• provide therapeutic and counselling interventions for young people and their families, using a range of therapeutic and counselling modalities
• participate in a range of supports including intake, assessment, workshops and referrals
• participate in case consultations with team members and provide guidance in case reviews
• actively liaise with network and local agencies
• co-facilitate staff training on mental health and trauma
what we are looking for
You will be creative and collaborative by nature and will enjoy working through a different approach to each client and situation. With a flexible and mature approach, you can work independently as well as part of a team and understand how to build relationships with a wide range of people.
You will bring:
• passion, commitment and belief in young people
• bachelor qualifications in Psychology, Social Work or Counselling and at least 3 years experience working therapeutically with at risk children, young people and families
• experience using a wide range of modalities, including expressive and creative therapies
• strong understanding of trauma and its impacts on development, behaviours, parenting and attachment
• experience in therapeutic life story work is highly desirable
